Best Rainy Day Activities for Preschoolers (Ages 3-5)

Preschoolers at 3 to 5 have the attention span and motor skills to do more than toddlers, but they still burn through an activity in 10 to 20 minutes. These are grouped by mess level, so you can match the activity to how much energy you have for cleanup today.

No mess, ready in two minutes

• Sock puppet theater: pair socks with marker faces or googly eyes, and let her put on a show behind the couch.
• Indoor scavenger hunt: a list of five things (something red, something soft, something round) to find around the house.

• Playdough kitchen: playdough plus real (clean) kitchen tools, a rolling pin, cookie cutters, a plastic knife.
• Shaving cream finger paint: shaving cream on a cookie sheet or the bathtub wall, easy cleanup with a wet washcloth after.
• Indoor picnic: a blanket on the floor, a simple lunch, pretend you’re somewhere else. Sounds small, kids treat it like an event.
